According to a study that looked at 154 countries, the UK isn’t anywhere near the top in Europe in terms of the use of Information and Communications Technology or ICT.

The study was conducted by ITU (International Telecommunications Union), a leading United Nations agency for Information and Communications Technology related issues. The agency uses two different measures to rank countries on the basis of their use of ICT. The first measure is the ICT Development Index that combines key indicators like the number of households with computers, access, skills and literacy levels of the country. The second measure is the ICT Price Basket, which compares prices of similar services in each country.

The study puts Britain at the 10th place on the scale of the most active ICT users. The ITU attributes Britain’s lower rankings to the high cost of services in the country. When it comes to the top, the Scandinavian countries fill up the slots as usual. Sweden is on the top, followed closely by Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. This may come as a bit of a rude surprise to the government, as despite its efforts, the country has fallen behind other European countries in terms of ICT services.

The ITU also mentioned that it expects mobile broadband to play a major role in expanding ICT services throughout the globe. The agency said that it is now possible to connect more people at higher speeds via mobile broadband because of the spread of 3G mobile networks in many countries.
