Academic Gowns
Academic gowns are commonly known as graduation gowns, these are outfits worn in an academic setting in the primary, secondary and tertiary settings but it is more pronounced among those who have attained a university degree. A long time ago, university institutions kept a standard and elaborate code of dressing in which gowns were worn on a daily basis. Over the 12th and 13th century, academic gowns
were mostly worn in monasteries to convey peace and harmony in the day to day activities. The gowns were all distinctively black with trims of gold in the universities but monasteries and other institutions wore brown or white gowns.
This system has with time been overtaken and more colors are identifiable in graduations in the modern times. The incorporation of colors in academic gowns was done to make the different institutions be distinctive in theme. In addition the colors are meant to distinguish the different the academic disciplines such as green which stands for nature symbolized medicine from medieval herbs, white as in white trimmings that represent letters and arts, red which is a symbol for many churches to represent theologists, olive color that symbolizes pharmacy and golden yellow representing the abundant and golden wealth of science research.
