The British Government’s controversial plan of disconnecting users indulging in internet piracy have met with approval from a committee of MPs. The committee has found the plan ‘justifiable’ in spite of its constant opposition by campaigners and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The Government’s Digital Economy Bill hit the headlines over its proposals to deal with the internet pirates. The measures suggest that the ISPs send a warning letter to anyone found downloading illegally and then cut off the connections of repeated offenders

But both the ISPs and consumer rights have rejected the plans, saying ISPs should not control online behaviour and that tracking the IP address carrying out illegal downloads does not necessarily track the actual user.

However, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights, which reviewed the plans, has found the idea quite fair. Even as the committee believes more information on the topic is needed, it said the Government should take more stringent steps to protect copyright. The committee has also asked for a better definition of the term repeat offender and wants a clearer explanation of the rules. It has now asked Ofcom to see to the technical aspects of the proposal.

In the committee’s opinion it is not correct to say that the implementation of the current proposals will violate the privacy of internet users or breach their “freedom of expression or their right to respect for their property rights”. According to the committee the “limited impact” on the rights of the internet users because of the execution of these plans is justifiable.

BT Openreach has announced the areas it has demarcated as the first recipients of the new age, super-fast broadband in the period between 2009 and 2012. Point Topic, a telecommunications research company, has recently published the maps of the UK showing these areas.
