Jewellery Quarter, a renowned industrial district in Birmingham, is being renovated according to BREEAM standards by developer Chord Deeley, in close association with Urban Initiatives and Online Architects Limited. A St Georges plan has been designed to renovate the Kettleworks factory, which forms the first phase of the entire renovation plan. The factory, a landmark construction that has a history of its own, was originally a brass foundry that was later converted to a manufacturing unit for lamps, tea sets and copper kettles.

The entire office planning for the Jewellery Quarter concentrates on maintaining its 1890s look while modernising the area to suit present-day needs. The entire renovation, which is expected to take anywhere between three to five years to finish, is estimated to cost around £160 million. However, renovation of the Kettleworks factory is expected to be completed by autumn 2010. Chord Deeley is particular about ensuring that the exterior of this landmark building is not disturbed while the office interiors are converted into trendy working spaces.

The overall plan includes construction of BREEAM approved low cost offices measuring 236,000 square feet in total, along with more than 320 safe and secure parking lots. In addition, there are also plans to build top-notch residential zones along with two big hotels with 250 bedrooms. Further, 12,000 square feet of commercial space has been allocated for restaurants and bars.

The entire plan of the developers is to convert the Jewellery Quarter area into an excellent residential, recreational and commercial hub in the city.

John Lewis may soon be opening a 40,000 sq ft call centre in Manchester as property sources report that the city centre has come out ahead of suburb Didsbury.

The retail chain is thought to be looking at Ask Developments First Street offices and Argent’s offices located at 3 Piccadilly Place. It is understood from sources that the company has decided against two locations in Didsbury.

The final location of the retail chain will create up to 350 jobs and is needed by John Lewis in order to meet the growth of the online sector of the shopping chain.

An insider stated that the city centre is the prime office relocation choice for the department chain because it already has all the resources that the company will need.
